Instrumentation & Automation

We work with instrumentation and automation OEMs on their product engineering requirements by providing hardware or software engineering. Our engineering team works closely with the systems team to create embeded controls, graphic user interface (GUI), human-machine interface (HMI), board support packages (BSP), device drivers for microcontroller/digital signal processors (DSP)/field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) based systems.

Lifesciences & Medical Devices

Building on the success in the semiconductor industry, we are currently expanding into the life-sciences instrumentation and medical-devices market. Like the semiconductor industry, we have undertaken complex engineering projects - some from ideas to prototype, others including value engineering or providing sustained engineering support through later parts of the product life cycle.

Page 1 Customer:This product was developed for a multi-billion dollar US company which has been a pioneer in large-format industrial printing systems.Challenge:The customer had acquired a unique solvent recovery technology and wanted to build an automated system around it to recover and reuse developer used in lithographic manufacturing of flexible printing plates. The target was to achieve 90% recovery. Customer approached Vignani to work hand-in hand with his contract manufacturer to design and prototype the product. Challenges included developing the system in parallel with technology continuous process development by the customer.
Vignani’'s Solution:Vignani provided the system design, key component selection, mechanical design, control system design, and system software.Working with the customer’s contract manufacturer, six alpha systems were built and tested.Vignani provided the manufacturing documentation, user manuals, service manuals, and installation guide.Vignani designed and provided a service training course for the customer’s lead service managers.The design solution was focused on cost and serviceability as well safety and EMI/EMC Compliance.Vignani designed a user-friendly GUI with a touch screen interface showing entire process status display with piping and instrumentationWeb-based remote data logging, monitoring, and control was provided for use by the customer’s service organization.

Page 2 Vignani's SolutionProvided the solution on two fronts, mechanical redesign and a new embedded controls approach.Conceived an innovative design approach for substantially improved manufacturability of the lead-shielded enclosure.Assembly and serviceability issues were solved while significantly reducing cost.Redesigned automated doors for loading/unloading PCBAs resolved unacceptable reliability of the previous design.A new embedded system for the controller was designed using a Freescale 32 bit processor along with requisite firmware changes.Controls packaging was modularized to allow module test during the manufacturing process.

Customer:The customer is a $2.5 billion Indian-government owned supplier of advanced electronics products to the Indian Armed Forces and Department of Transportation. They specialize in the manufacture of technology systems for military communications, electronic warfare, sound and video broadcasting. They also supply optoelectronics and electronic components.Challenge:The customer required an upgrade to a traffic signaling system from stand-alone timer units to a completely automated, intelligent system. Challenges included solving existing thermal management problems. Deliverables included one hundred prototypes for test and evaluation.

From 1995 to 2005 Wil worked for Applied Materials and was part of the European Operating Committee in his role as Country Manager for the Netherlands and Belgium and as Function Head IT. At the corporate level Wil was globally responsible for IT strategic Planning and Architecture. From 2005 till March 2008 will was CEO for Ctac, a SAP consulting and services organization with activities in the Netherlands and Belgium . When Wil joined, Ctac counted 130 staff and had revenue of 10 million euros. By the end of 2007 staff had grown to nearly 400 and revenue reached 49 million euros.
